Forensic Building Science President Presents at Windstorm Insurance Network Conference

Sean Fee, President of Forensic Building Science, presented at the Windstorm Insurance Network Conference

Sean Fee co-hosts panels on hurricane and wind forces and wind vs. wave damage

ORLANDO, Fla. —  Sean Fee, president of Forensic Building Science, presented on two panels at the Windstorm Insurance Network (WIND) Conference in Orlando. The first breakout session, “Hurricane and Wind Forces on Building Envelope Components”, covered the relationship between wind speeds and the resulting forces on building envelope components, including fenestration, cladding, and roof materials, during hurricane and high wind events. Fee co-hosted the panel on Jan. 31 from 11:15-1 p.m. with Megan Reese, senior managing engineer and regional manager at YA Engineer Services; Wiley Hodges, attorney at Butler Weihmuller Katz Craig, LLP; and Michael Fried, vice president and partner at Strategic Claims Consultants. Attendees earned 2 CE/CLE credits. Fee also co-presented “Wind vs. Wave Damage from Hurricane Ian” on Jan. 31 from 4:15-6 p.m. with Aaron Duba, regional manager and forensic engineer at Haag Global; Brandon Bealmear, fenestration practice lead and senior engineer at Haag Global; James Dougherty, attorney at Weisser, Elazar & Kantor, PLLC; Eli Marger, shareholder at Kubicki Draper, P.A.; and John Minor, president and chief executive officer at Complete General Contractors, Inc. This workshop covered property damage assessments from wind and floods.

“Understanding the dynamic interplay between natural forces and built structures is crucial. There is a narrative within every building. It was great to share insights at the WIND conference on these esteemed panels,” says Fee.

Fee is a licensed general contractor, senior building consultant, umpire and appraiser. He has over 30 years of experience in construction management, construction field operations, loss restoration, building inspections and damage causation determination throughout North America. He carries advanced education in building envelope components, building codes, building failure mechanisms and their impact, safety management and workers’ compensation law.

The “Hurricane and Wind Forces on Building Envelope Components” presentation covered common policy language and legal hurdles that can occur when handling hurricane and high wind claims. The effects of wind on building envelope components were compared to the design requirements of building codes and other industry standards. Hypothetical examples were utilized to compare the effects of various wind speeds on different building typologies and geographical locations.

The “Wind vs. Wave Damage from Hurricane Ian” presentation provided attendees with information on weather collection, damage assessments and policy interpretation regarding wind or flood waters.

The annual WIND conference was held on Jan. 29 – Feb 1 at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld®. The 3-day event included breakout sessions, panel discussions, training, classes, certifications, professional development, and networking opportunities for the property insurance claims industry. Attendees include attorneys, contractors, claims adjusters, staff and company adjusters, restoration professionals, engineers, underwriters, and forensic accountants throughout the U.S. See the full conference agenda.
